Fear, excuses, mentors and a single quote...

One week into 2018. How are you doing on your goals? Are you committed?

One quote from a recent Tim Ferris Book is emblazoned in my mind and has helped me stay fast to my plans and to add a few things to that plan...

"Not Dead, Cant Quit!"

Sometimes it's the smallest of phrases that keep us on track to DTFW (do the "flipping" work).

If you're physically able, why don't we do the work? Is it because we're afraid to fail? Afraid to succeed? Not truly able? Too distracted, to busy scrolling our latest social media feed? Long story short, there are no excuses if you aren't dead.

This quote was pulled from a quadruple amputee's story in the book, Kyle Maynar.  At first, I'll be honest with you, I didn't want to read this chapter.  As I dug deeper and plugged on, I realized why.

The reason why wasn't because it was going to be a sad story.  It wasn't because he was a wrestler and I didn't think I'd relate to his stories or athletic references.  I'll put it out there and admit that I was a bit put off at reading it, simply because I knew I'd probably read that this kid has done more than I could dream of. I had a feeling it might make me a bit uncomfortable with the excuses I put up when I'm faced with a facet of work, fitness or life that I'm trying to avoid.

I read it.  I re-read it.  There are no excuses.  It's not easy to admit that to ourselves.  But when we look at why we make them...when we confront the rationale behind them...that's when we find out the real reason we're not possibly achieving the most we can.  Most of us are simply held back by our own doing.  It's uncomfortable to think about...but once you start to look at things this way...you learn a lot about why you are the way you are.

I can't wait to read more stories and perspectives in this book.  I can feel the growth while reading it.

It's quite fitting that Julie and I received this book from two very dear mentors of our own, Roge & Sandy Riedinge of Beverly Internationa.

Thanks again for the book guys.  We are loving it.

Hope a few of you following me love it and find the stories growth filled too.

Here's the book...

Audi FIS Birds of Prey World Cup coverage & Fujifilm X on the mountain...

While commercial advertising work is my bread n butter, I’ve had the honor to be invited to shoot the Audi FIS Birds of Prey World Cup to cover racers, emotion, and the event action.

After three days at altitude in Beaver Creek, I’m heading into day four of coverage and it has been nothing short of amazing.  We’ve shot race action, fan and crowd vibe and lifestyle imagery and I’ve enjoyed the challenges of each.  From lighting and exposure in the snow, to dialing in the gear for the cold to testing the limits of the Fujifilm X systems it’s been quite a week.

I have to give a shout out to Fujifilm.  Having vacillated between Canon Pro Series and Fujifilm X Series gear over the past two years, I finally settled in on a full kit of Fujifilm X and have relinquished my grip on the Canon stuff.  I’m a full on convert.  I don’t know of another way to put it, but the colors it renders are like nothing else, It covers sports action shots perfectly and handles the cold of the mountains like a champ.

The ski racing community thus far has been a fascinating culture to witness.  All of the international racers, media and teams…all of the bustle, hustle and pomp.  It’s a sight for sure…shooting and rubbing elbows with the likes of Bode Miller and Ted Ligety has been a pretty cool experience too.

Highlights of this trip are too many to mention but I have to say, the crisp mountain air, the wonderful Vail Valley Foundation crew and amazing athletes have made this a trip to be etched in my memories forever.

Here are a few of the photographs from the week so far, more to come on results, racers etc.

Drone Aerial Videography & Photography

I recently had the opportunity to capture aerial video and a few photos for a commercial client,  shooting both their warehouse and office spaces via a DJI Drone.  His needs were relatively straight forward and the timing needed was "sooner rather than later"!  ;)

Drone Aerial Photography

Having worked in the field of Aerial photography & videography for quite some time, I have captured aerial imagery in a number of different ways including commercial airplanes, commercial helicopters, remotely controlled airplanes and "drones" from a number of manufacturers.

A couple years ago, I decided to move away from aerial photography since it was a difficult landscape to navigate due to client's declining budgets and the entry of the FAA into the use of drones.  As time marched on and the FAA became clearer (not that it's completely clear as a fish tank now) the rules of the land have become much more navigable.  I now hold a FAA certified UAS Remote Pilot Certificate and am currently FAA Part 107 commercial pilot.

So what does that mean?  Well, to be honest, I'm more free than ever to capture and create aerial video and aerial photography for my clients at a moments notice and far less expensively than before.  Commercial helicopters in 2015 cost $565/hr and upwards to operate!! Add to that my time as a photographer while in the air, travel time and editing.  Now, travel time and editing have not changed that much, but operating costs have declined dramatically.  I still take into account equipment acquisition, maintenance, annual equipment overhauls and other costs of doing business, but in the end it has lent me the opportunity to serve my aerial customers quickly and cost effectively while also cutting down the burden of flight planning and travel time for myself.

Add to all of it the safety of not actually being "in the aircraft" which makes my wife far less nervous than the days I'd have to hang out the side of an open cockpit Robinson R-44.  :D

Drones have been making a major push in the world of aerial photography and aerial videography and it's clear it will be the way of the future for many of us versus the old ways of doing it.  I'm all in with it and can't wait to see what the future holds for drone companies like DJI, GoPro, Yuneec and PixHawk.

Here's a quick tease of the vide that will be integrated into my client's final project.

Healthcare Photography - Capturing an image library for new website

More healthcare imagery from web rebuild at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Looking back I am reminded of the truly genuine people I had the chance to photograph, of them, some of the top nurses, case managers, doctors and surgeons in the midwest.  Everyone our team encountered during the shoot had a genuine attitude of caring and concern for their patients.  Whether it be a serious care situation such as cancer or heart attack, these are the folks that patients look to in times when they are most vulnerable.

Often times when hospitals re-vamp their brand, they opt for stock healthcare photography.  While maybe this works in big cities where the care is more palliative and the hospital is not really "tied into" the community, in mid to smaller sized towns, these hospitals are pillars of the community.  Utilizing REAL PEOPLE, REAL DR's, REAL NURSES in the photography, makes all the difference.

From familiar faces, to genuine looks, leave it to the pros to do their own job.  No one plays the part better.
