Pont Saint-BénézetA medieval bridge in the town of Avignon, in southern France. Now since abandoned due to extreme and frequent flooding of the Rhone river. Avignon bridge was built in 12th century. The tale is told that a young shepherd boy from a small hamlet nearby Avignon heard the voice of Jesus Christ asking him to build the bridge across the river. Although ridiculed at first, he won support as he dramatically lifted a stone block at the mocking of bystanders. A Bridge Brotherhood was formed to oversee it’s construction which was completed in 1185. Classified as a World Heritage Site with the Palais des Papes and Cathédrale Notre-Dame.
